What Healthcare Providers Need to Know About the Clarity Clinic Connection within the Dexcom G7 App

Through a software update, Dexcom G7 users can now easily share glucose data with the healthcare team through the Dexcom G7 App.

Through a software update, Dexcom G7 users can now easily share glucose data with the healthcare team through the Dexcom G7 App.* Setting up data sharing is straightforward, and once connected, the data transfer is automatic. This new, simplified method of sharing glucose data ensures that you have the most up-to-date information to support your patients. †

How Patients Can Start Sharing Data Through the Dexcom G7 App

Provide your patient with your Clarity Clinic Code and encourage the Dexcom user to follow these simple steps.

To Begin Sharing Dexcom G7 Data, encourage Dexcom users to:

Open the Dexcom G7 App: Open the Dexcom G7 app on their smartphone.

Navigate to Connections: Tap on the Connections tab within the app.

Select Clarity Clinic: Choose the Clarity Clinic option and tap “Continue”.

Enter Clinic Code: Input the Clarity Clinic Code (provided by healthcare provider).

Confirm Details: Verify the clinic details and tap “Done” to complete the setup.

Providers can also share the Dexcom Help Page: "Setting up Dexcom Clarity” which provides step-by-step instructions on how to start sharing their data with the G7 App.

Once these steps are completed, your patient’s Dexcom G7 data will be shared with your clinic automatically. This connection allows continuous glucose data transfer and remains active until the patient or clinician decides to stop sharing. This same simplified data sharing experience is coming soon to Stelo by Dexcom.

Insulet has announced two important innovations for their Ominpod® 5 automated insulin delivery (AID) system:

Omnipod 5 integration with Dexcom G7 Sensor: This new feature will become broadly available over the coming months.

Omnipod 5 App for iPhone with Dexcom G6 recently started a limited market release with availability expected later this year.

The Omnipod 5 system’s integration with the Dexcom G7 requires a new Pod, one which is compatible with both the Dexcom G6 and G7 sensors.

Important Information for Starting Patients on Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G7 Sensor:

This Pod will have the same National Drug Code (NDC) as current Pods, which minimizes burden on clinic staff and means patients with Dexcom G6 insurance coverage for Pods will have Dexcom G7 insurance coverage for Pods. However, building up inventory of this new Pod in retail pharmacies across the nation will take some time. For access, please see the information below.

For Patients Currently Using Multiple Daily Injections (MDI) or Tubed Pumps:

To initiate a patient on the Dexcom G7, prescribe the Omnipod 5 Intro Kit and Pods exclusively through ASPN Pharmacies. ASPN will ensure new Omnipod patients receive the Dexcom G6/G7 compatible Pods.

Detailed instructions are available here on how to prescribe Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G7.

For Current Omnipod 5 Patients:

No new Pod prescription or prior authorization is required for patients already using Omnipod 5.

Existing Omnipod 5 users will receive a free software update the week of July 29th, enabling them to pair a Dexcom G7 with a compatible Pod. Patients will be notified when the update is available, along with detailed instructions.

Advise patients to continue using their Dexcom G6 supplies until they receive Pods labeled "Compatible with Dexcom G7" on their refill box.

Once patients see the "Compatible with Dexcom G7" label, prescribe the Dexcom G7 sensor.

iPhone Control with Omnipod 5 and Dexcom G6 Sensor:

The Omnipod 5 App for iPhone will initially launch with the Dexcom G6 sensor. Therefore, current patients preferring iPhone control should continue using the Dexcom G6 sensor.

For new patients desiring iPhone control, prescribe Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G6 as usual.

These updates aim to enhance patient care by integrating the latest technology seamlessly into the Omnipod 5 system.

Please review this information carefully and ensure your patients are informed of these exciting advancements.

For more information on the latest clinical evidence on the use of a tubeless insulin delivery system, check out this Research Spotlight article

For more information about these updates, visit Omnipod’s FAQs: G7 FAQs and iPhone FAQs.

© 2024 Insulet Corporation.

Despite advancements, many individuals with T1D struggle to maintain optimal glycemic control. Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, particularly hybrid closed-loop (HCL) systems, aim to improve control and reduce burden by automating insulin delivery based on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data.

In this Research Spotlight we are highlighting a recent study:

Peacock, S., Frizelle, I. & Hussain, S. A Systematic Review of Commercial Hybrid Closed-Loop Automated Insulin Delivery Systems. Diabetes Ther 14, 839–855 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1007/ s13300-023-01394-5

The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist. Studies focusing on single-hormone commercial hybrid AID systems, involving participants with T1D, and reporting endpoints related to glycemic control were included.

The following endpoints were the main focus of the review:

Participants with T1D

A1c levels

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) events

% of Time in Range (TIR) / Change in TIR

Incidents of severe hypoglycemia

Commercial HCL systems effectively improve TIR and glycemic control in T1D, with minimal risk of severe hypoglycemia.

Studies showed that HCL systems generally improved time in range (TIR) and glycemic control without increasing severe hypoglycemia. Psychosocial outcomes, such as quality of life and treatment satisfaction, were generally positive.

Results (Glycemic Outcomes)

Commercial HCL AID Systems are effective and can improve TIR3

Improvements in glycemic control were shown without increasing the incidence of severe hypoglycemia

Glycemic outcomes supported by real-world studies and randomized control trials (psychosocial endpoints analyzed separately - showing generally positive outcomes, but more data needed)

Tue, 11/14/2023 - 00:38

New qualitative study exploring impact of Real-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring on psychosocial outcomes in users with Type 2 diabetes on non-intensive insulin therapy.*

Background

Increased perceived control is associated with improved confidence & motivation in regard to diabetes self care

Progression of type 2 diabetes (T2D) demands complex treatment modalities that may impair patient confidence & psychological health

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provides access to glucose levels in real-time & for retrospective reflection with potential psychological benefits for T2D users1,2

Aim

To understand how patients’ experiences and learnings from using CGM relate to their demographics and changes in psychosocial & glycemic metrics

Methods

Participants answered open-ended questions about their experiences using CGM (including behavior & emotional impact)

Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis and inter-coder reliability

Participants were categorized based on reported changes to perceived control

Participant Demographics

Results

Perceived control is associated with confidence and motivation in regard to diabetes self-care. After 3 months of Dexcom CGM wear, most participants reported “high perceived control"

Dexcom CGM can lead to feelings of empowerment, emotional relief, and a heightened sense of diabetes management

Dexcom CGM provides valuable insights even to well informed users

In certain groups, wearing Dexcom CGM can decrease the emotional burden of diabetes

Download Resource

* study was conducted using Dexcom G6 CGM System. 1. Ehrhardt N, et al. JDST. 2019;13(2):271-275 2. Crawford M, et al. ATTD. 2022; Abstract #972

Adjusted difference, 19% (P<0.01).

Key Takeaways

Use of CGM is associated with greater A1C decrease than BGM alone in adults with T2D on basal insulin, regardless of their age.1,2

Using CGM is beneficial for adults aged 65 and above who have type 2 diabetes (T2D) and struggle to control their glucose levels using only basal insulin.2

The improvements in glucose control seen with CGM are just as significant in older adults as they are in younger ones.1

* adjusted difference= -0.65% (95% CI -1.49, 0.19) (p=0.13) ** adjusted difference= -0.35% ( 95% CI -0.77, 0.07) (p=0.10)

† A1C was collected at randomization, month 3, and month 8 and measured at a central laboratory

‡ Participants in the CGM group wore the device continuously up through 8 months, whereas participants in the BGM group wore a blinded CGM during the 10 days after the 3-month visit and 10 days leading up to the 8-month visit.

1.
